Week 10

P3070114

March 7, 2016
The Bull & Wall Street
South Street Seaport

Train In/Out:  Milford, CT
Camera:  Olympus OM-D E-M1, m.Zuiko 17mm, m.Zuiko 75-300mm, m.Zuiko 8mm f1.8

I started the day off extremely noisy! OMG, I wish there was sound included with the image above (I did take video, need to create a YouTube channel I think).  Above this light there was jackhammering.  Not a little bit of jackhammering, full out non-stop brutal noise.  And when I returned around 3pm, it was still going on. Major renovations going on in Grand Central. I read that they may close the Campbell Apartment (bar), of course that was reported in the NY Post which is a bit like the Enquirer.

P3070038

Destination #1 of the day, the bull in the Wall Street area.  He was impressive.  As was all the fondling.  ??

People could not get enough photos doing this. (iPhone pic)

P3070044 Edit

Favorite photo of the day.  Trinity Church, very close to the 9/11 area, a block or two north of The Bull. I do find that skinny tall "shadowy" building on the right almost like a ghost building. Not sure why it looks that transparent.

P3070048 Edit

P3070048

I think I like the color version better.

P3070055

Old meets new.

P3070066

Plaza area dedicated to the work of David Rockefeller.

P3070068 Edit

Love this, looking up under the art piece.

P3070079 Edit

New York Stock Exchange Building. There was a very silent feel to this area, kind of depressing. Lots of security and barricades. Constant reminders of 9/11.

P3070083

Across the way from NYSE is Federal Hall with a large monument of George Washington who was inaugurated there.  I'm sure George must be so proud to have all that junk made in China being sold across the way.

P3070085 Edit

I don't think he was praying for a cheap necklace made overseas.

P3070092

P3070093

P3070095

There was art throughout the building with a Harlem theme.

P3070099 Edit

Perhaps the most interesting thing I saw on this day.  I'm not much for museums, but this stone and the Bible below were nice to see.

I'm including this gentleman because it struck me how just a few miles away coming in from CT on the train, I pass through the Bronx.  The garbage along the tracks is excessive.  And here we have a man sweeping, well, not much.  I also noticed there were no homeless on the streets in this area.

P3070149 Edit 2

This image answers the age old question, can you find a place in NYC to eat a taco in a vintage Airstream camper?  Yes, yes you can.

P3070154

Told ya.

P3070172

Selfie in the South Street Pier 17 area.  It was totally under construction. The tall ships were there but all around was construction which I really don't do well being around. I did not stay long in the area. I will head back in the fall...although they have a long way to go.  A friend who lives in Brooklyn was telling me that this area is being totally made over and he's not thrilled.  Gentrification at work, in his opinion.

P3070175

Now that's a bike accessory.

P3070183

Of course I thought of the A$$MAN from that classic Seinfeld episode.

P3070190

Was it?  Absolutely not. But better than my 99 cent pizza from Week 9 in Greenwich Village.

P3070203

OK, so for someone who avoids these grates (mentioned in Week 9), this was a ridiculous amount of them.

P3070221

These are my shoes. Clearly I COULD walk on those grates if I really wanted to...

P3070270

...but I wished I could have seen this person come upon the ocean of grates on the sidewalk.

P3070214

Doggie of the day.

P3070255

Bridal couple of the day.  Behind them is a behemoth court house, must have tied the knot there.

P3070295

Back to Midtown.  I took more photos than what I included on this page but nothing thrilled me and the area left me feeling a bit droopy.  The Wall Street / City Hall area was not my cup of tea. Pretty buildings but a stern/clinical feel to the area, very silent and a bit unfriendly. Or maybe it was my mood although I felt fine and was looking forward to the trip. I plan to go down again sometime, walk the Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridges.  I shall reassess my feelings about the area next time.

The above subway entrance was across the street from Grand Central. When I got back I went out a different entrance rather than heading to Grand Central underground.  Stunning for sure.

P3070298

Someone buried a mermaid right out in the open.

P3070305

I found it!!

Totally kidding. I was not looking for the Mail Room but my train got moved to Track 15 and voila, there it was in all its drab olive splendor.

P3070300

Let's hope the next Magic Monday is a bit more exciting. I'm learning that I'm very sensitive to the different areas of the city. The look, feel, people, attitudes, level of excitement & seriousness...they all vary tremendously.  As does my interest in what I want to photograph.  I'm not too into architecture, figured that out [again] today. I did like the fisheye view of the Trinity Church.

That's a wrap on Week 10. A cool milestone to complete. Until the next next Magic Monday!

xo,

~MC
